Kim Tae-soo, Vice Chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Council's Housing and Space Committee (People Power Party, Seongbuk-gu 4), announced that the 'Seoul Metropolitan Government Indoor Air Quality Management Ordinance Partial Amendment Ordinance' to reduce the indoor inflow of radon from multi-use facilities or apartment complexes passed the plenary session on the 29th of last month.
Last year, when residents of newly built apartments in Seoul self-measured their indoor air quality, some households showed levels of radon, a class 1 carcinogen, above the Ministry of Environment's recommended standard, sparking controversy as group complaints were filed and media coverage followed.
In this regard, Rep. Kim Tae-soo stated that he proposed the amendment to contribute to protecting the health of citizens and creating a safe indoor environment by recommending the use of radon reduction methods when installing multi-use facilities or apartment complexes to reduce indoor
radon concentrations. The ordinance that passed this plenary session includes a provision that allows the mayor to recommend that those installing multi-use facilities or apartment complexes (including renovation and maintenance of existing facilities or houses) in areas where radon is a health risk to take necessary measures, such as using shielding methods, to reduce the indoor inflow of radon. In addition, it allows the mayor to recommend that
owners of multi-use facilities or apartment complexes with high radon concentrations manage indoor radon concentrations in accordance with the standards stipulated in the 'Enforcement Decree of the Indoor Air Quality Management Act.'
Assemblyman Kim said, “I expect that this ordinance revision will help protect citizens’ health from radon, a class 1 carcinogen, and create a safe indoor environment,” and added, “I will continue to pay close attention and watch so that the Seoul Metropolitan Government can come up with more proactive radon reduction measures in the future.”
